Well said, Ron! This is one article that hit home with me. We wouldn’t have nearly as many dogs in Rescue if people would consider the information contained in this article. I can’t even imagine the amount of money I have spent on dogs over my lifetime — I don’t even want to think about it. I wouldn’t trade them for the world though.

I was outside working in the yard when I realized I had forgotten:
1) To explain why a Boerboel is worse than a lot of dogs (mostly just the bigger/tougher thing, but also some of the breed responsibility with respect to exposing to stimuli so they don’t over-react, etc.)
2) The problem I still have keeping screens in windows
3) The TIME commitment. Everyone in rescue sees those ads where people say “we need to get rid of this great dog because it turns out we don’t have time.”
Anyway, thanks for the comments, and indeed, it’s quite depressing if you pull out a calculator!

… oh ya, and that antique screen door. That poor door has been rebuilt and patched some twenty times, the last time just this weekend. It’s a terrible shadow of what it used to be, having been clawed apart over and over again, to get in the house, to get out of the house, to attempt to get at a dog in heat or a raccoon or… I don’t even know. But once they learned that SOMETIMES if you work hard enough on that old door it’ll give way to freedom, it’s been a purple heart deserving soldier in the war of dogs versus house.

Very well written Ron – and if it’s any consolation, there are people out there (read: we) who know exactly what you are talking about, and you have our utmost sympathy
On the other hand, it’s heartening to think that there are others out there who put up with as much – if not more – than we do for the love of our pets, and who know that the return we get from these dogs makes the actual investment seem trivial.

Very nice write up Ron, I had to chuckle when I read about the screens…I haven’t had a screen in any of our doors in a year now..or couch pillows..
or a pair of slippers…or hat…or gloves…lol…
Wouldn’t trade it for anything…

Hey, Reinhardt, I’m glad I’m not alone — though I could sure use a few other horror stories from others so I don’t feel so bad.
I also remembered ANOTHER kennel that my GSD trashed, but with that one he got hurt (he tried to claw his way out of an aluminum sided kennel, and he got his face badly cut up) and they were worried I was going to sue them, so they didn’t charge me anything. He was fine, but needed stitches. Sigh.

Thanks, JT.
Gloves and hats are still surviving in my place, though a couple of the pillows have the corners chewed.

Nice post ,
but I still love my boerboel (your 28 000 US after 12 years actually sounds great, since we already spent 10 000 and more on health bills only for the one 2 1/2 yrs old boerboel)
all the best
