Petfinder Rescue Roundup of North American Boerboels

Written by boerboels.ca on May 25th, 2010

Been a while since I’ve done an update on the Petfinders Boerboel dogs in need. As always, beware of the rescue as there seem to be a couple of high volume pet stores acting like rescues, but there seem to be a few dogs in need out there. This link gets you all the Boerboel’s in the US at the moment.

There are (as of 2010/05/25): Two in Florida, two in Maryland, and individuals in Alabama, Texas, PA, CO, Ontario, etc.

Please take a quick look, and if you’re local, and a breeder or enthusiast, even if it’s not your dog consider taking  a moment to help the shelter/rescue find a home or maybe donate some money or toys or food for the pup, or even phone up and see what the status is (some of these dogs could be on borrowed time, esp. those still in shelters).

Thanks!

Ron

Hey Ron, just something to check out, I noticed sometimes the Boerboels aren’t listed under Boerboels but under mastiffs. The girl we just rescued from the Boston pound was listed like that.
    just an fyi…

Reading over your post that there was some effort/ interest in starting a Boerboel rescue..
I think this blog is as close as there is now….
Did the idea not take off or were there any issues with it?
I build web sites so that part would be easy anyway….
    Thoughts? Suggestions?

First off, good point on the Mastiff! Never thought of that, but it’s obvious as the breed is rare(ish) and the shelters are overworked.

On the rescue, it’s really a matter of organization as best as I can figure. There are only so many people and so much area to cover. I can also help with any tech issues or maybe some transport, but I’m not setup for foster (too many dogs and kids to do so safely) and there are so many distributed people it really takes someone with a strong organizational bent to be the glue for the organization.

That person can’t be me, as I’m just not enough of a presence in the breed or in rescue in general, and it’s not really my strength. Things work best if I’m more of a “cog in the machine” sort of person than a controller. That said, as long as there’s a void, I’m going to fill it, so the sooner a “real” rescue gets started the better as I’m not doing all that much!

    Thanks!

Just wondering about some of those listed. Particularly from Gentle Giants website. I’ve been reading about the breed and looking at rescues for awhile now and that posting on Nala has been around for almost a year.
Do you know of anyone who’s had dealings with Gentle Giants? Are they legit?

  4. boerboels.ca says:

You know, my short answer on “are they legit” is honestly, “I don’t know”. BUT I have heard a lot of complaints about that rescue in particular. That said, I don’t like to have a “trial via the internet” so I won’t assume that just because I’m told to avoid them that they are therefore bad, thus you really may want to do some due diligence on your own: Rumor has them asking large adoption fees, and profiting from the placements. That sort of has them acting like a pet store for mature, in demand dog breeds.

The sad thing is, there is Nala, she’s just a poor dog and she doesn’t care which agency is handling her “file”, and she apparently needs a home. I honestly don’t know what to suggest here. Maybe call them up and see what “the deal is” and post it here? I should have done so long ago, but I’m pretty much at arm’s length from contacting any non-local rescues directly, as there are too many of them for me to be able to deal with.

If you get any information, please post here, or on the Yahoo group(s) or somewhere else Boerboel-ish.

    Thanks,
    Ron

Hey Ron, thanks for the insite on the rescue idea…
Things being so spread out as far as people, groups and the dogs a real rescue at this point may not be possible…I guess what I am thinking is maybe a central place with a collection of information, a current list of dogs in need around the world if possible…a hub of sorts of all the different groups and resources….
We have a small dog rescue now that I need to build a web site for and since the Boerboels are my passion they obviously would be the center focus…
I’m working on a list now of what I need, domain names, web space etc…if it’s ok with you I would like to link your blog up, the more exposure the better..
Although I have been involved with the breed for a couple of years now I still have much to learn and I’m hoping all the experts out there will be willing to share ideas to make this thing something really good.
    Moving on….
Between this blog and the Boerboel group there has been allot of discussion about breeders as of late…working with rescue dogs I have some real strong opinions about this…perhaps to strong for the Boerboel groups lol…but hey no point in talking about the subject if it’s not going to count for something! Just making hot air otherwise :-) )
I haven’t heard good things about Gentle Giants rescue either..I researched them allot…my suggestion to anyone looking to deal with them is Google them up and make your own opinion…
Honestly I’m not holding allot of rescues in high regards these days…
    Wow I am feel’in chatty tonight…
