Boerboel Rescue in Canada and the US

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Good day, all!

Just a bit of an update on rescue for the people who come here looking for dogs or looking to adopt out your dog.

I have written a pretty good article on where to go and what to do as of a couple years ago, but times have changed, and I have to say it’s for the better! We now have a central location for rescue in North America, thanks to Jerry at TheBoerboelNetwork.com

On the web: http://www.theboerboelnetwork.com/adopt/adopt.html

On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/boerboelnetwork

If you still need help, feel free to contact us here, and we will try to help, but that is currently (as of Summer 2010) the central location for Boerboels in need.

Thanks!

Ron

Update on rescue situation in the North West

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

As some of you know, I was working behind the scenes on attempting to pry some dogs out of an abuse case in the North West for the last two months. Some of the dogs were slated to be put down, and I was hoping to prevent that. It was a lot of work, but the Humane Society was apparently not interested in having the animals re-homed. I believe (I’m not directly involved) that at this time that they have won the legal right to control the animals, and they will be variously put down, or neutered and evaluated for placement abilities. From what I know some of the dogs slated for destruction are serious protection dogs, but not worthy of a death sentence. I think I know the reasons they worked so hard to gain control, and I guess I can sort of understand it: They just wanted to be sure that the animals avoided any further abuse, and the only way to do that for sure is to put them down, I guess. In the future, I’d suggest that they go after the alleged abusers, thus having an air tight way of controlling the safety of the animals, instead of going at it from the animals’ side, but I have to assume they knew what they are doing.

In full disclosure, my motives were not 100% rescue related: One of the dogs was a direct son of Corma Buks (a foundation dog that passed away in 1997, but who still rarely has available offspring such as this dog thanks to AI) and a dog geek like myself really wanted to get a hold of him for “my breeding program” (currently consisting of zero litters as the rescue stuff makes me feel too guilty to actually put more dogs out there. :) )

Anyway, I just hope that everyone is sure they did — and that they will continue to — consider what is best for the animals.

UPDATE 20100623 – I have heard that some pressure has apparently softened their hearts a bit, and now they are going to approach breed rescues again as opposed to culling the tougher dogs. Good news!

Petfinder Rescue Roundup of North American Boerboels

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Been a while since I’ve done an update on the Petfinders Boerboel dogs in need. As always, beware of the rescue as there seem to be a couple of high volume pet stores acting like rescues, but there seem to be a few dogs in need out there. This link gets you all the Boerboel’s in the US at the moment.

There are (as of 2010/05/25): Two in Florida, two in Maryland, and individuals in Alabama, Texas, PA, CO, Ontario, etc.

Please take a quick look, and if you’re local, and a breeder or enthusiast, even if it’s not your dog consider taking  a moment to help the shelter/rescue find a home or maybe donate some money or toys or food for the pup, or even phone up and see what the status is (some of these dogs could be on borrowed time, esp. those still in shelters).

Thanks!

Ron

Rescue a Boerboel

UPDATE NOTE:

I have had multiple warnings about adopting via PetFinder (see the comments section here) and I have not had time to fully investigate, but sadly this has somewhat muddied the waters of rescue with respect to PetFinder. I would use extreme care to get references for the rescue if you do use one, as some rescues seem to have a surprisingly bad reputation.

There are currently (as of this moment) some nine Boerboels listed in the US for adoption on PetFinder – if you or anyone you know is interested in the breed, this can be a great place to start. Save off that link right there and check it on occasion to see the current list of Boerboels available.

Here are a couple examples from today:

Amani

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=15168370

Amani

Amani is a Purebred South African Boerboel. He is 4 yrs old and neutered. He is also current on vaccines and microchipped. He is good with older children but not with other pets ( cats or dogs). A large fenced in yard is a must for our big boy. Amani is housebroken and knows all his basic commands

Nala

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11889980

Nala

Nala is a huge, young female brindle South African Boerboel Mastiff. Nala lived with two toddlers and was sweet and gentle to them. She loves kids! She is a big active dog and loves to be loved and loves to go places with her family! Her original owner called her “Baby Girl,” and she loves to be just that.

How Pit Bull Bans Affect Boerboel Owners

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Continuing on my “don’t ignore Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) just because your breed isn’t on the list” theme, this interesting article was brought to my attention by @KDelise of the National Canine Research Council (NCRC). Basically, Denver has what seems to be a really vague evaluation form that can be used to slot a lot of different tan coloured dogs (hey, what colour are Boerboels, typically? Oops.) into a death sentence.

According to NCRC:

…Recently, a woman driving with her dog stopped to let her dog relieve itself near a field. She knew about Denver’s breed ban, but she was unaware that she had crossed over into the Denver city limits (she was right on the border of another jurisdiction and Denver). Her dog was seized by officials and taken to animal control. At animal control the dog was evaluated using the Pit bull Evaluation Form. Three “experts” each filled out a form.

Denver’s holds that if at least two of the “experts” say it’s a pit bull, then the dog is a pit bull and very well may be put to death.

Full story here.

Basically, remember that:

  1. If you are traveling in or near a BSL area, bring proof (SABT documentation, etc.) that your Boerboel is indeed a Boerboel
  2. Be active in fighting BSL. Once it is enacted, it is very difficult to remove, and once a Pit Bull ban is enacted, it’s a very slight modification to add other breeds of the month, such as Rottweilers, German Shepherds, or, of course, Boerboels.
